Yes it can! - You either can assign a local network drive letter, or you can use UNC path, like e.g.: "\\fritz.box\SAMSUNG-HD103UJ-01\Pictures" as the root directory! - In future we will check out, if we also can make SoftChronizer FTP compatible.
Network compatibility seems to be a premium feature to many other duplicate file scanning programs, that will be packed in more expensive (eg, about 80, - US$) "Enterprise" versions. - With us, this feature is nothing special and of course you will get it for the normal SoftChronizer license price. If you have activated the "Levenshtein-Distance" algorithm on the "[Options] -> File Name - Fuzzy Logic" page, SoftChronizer also searches for filenames which are similiar. Results will then be grouped by filenames which are found by the "Levenshtein-Distance" algorithm, and not, -- as otherwise, -- by exactly the same names! ... So if the Levenshtein is activated (which it is by default), you also may find similiar files grouped together, which may have different file-sizes. - If you only want to group same filenames with same file sizes, then you either should deactivate the "[ ] Calculate Levenshtein Distance" checkbox, or you should use the "[x] Byte-by-Byte" search option (provided on the main window)! "Filesize - Fuzzy-Logic" scans for similiar or exactly the same filenames, but with differences in file sizes! ... In conjunction with the "Levenshtein-Distance" algorithm, this option really looks "unsharp" (fuzzy) to filenames and file sizes! - Most results should be manually compared by double-clicking on each found possible duplicate file, by showing the file-properties dialog (to be opened with the context-menu of the result-table) or by taking a look into the extra information on supported special file-types. ... The "Filesize - Fuzzy-Logic" option and the "Levenshtein-Distance" algorithm are both for to find duplicates never would be found otherwise, using byte-by-byte comparison or without the Levenshtein feature! The "Byte-by-Byte" search option is more accurate than every other method when searching for duplicate files! - Each byte of each file is compared with each byte of each other, until the first difference is found, or if found files are 100% equal. - SoftChronizer does this comparison in a quick memory-stream and not in a file-stream. - In contrast to SoftChronizer's "Byte-by-Byte" method, comparing files with CRC32 or hash codes, like some older duplicate-searchers do, is outdated, unprecise and very slow.
Using SoftChronizer's "Byte-by-Byte" search, you always can be sure, that 100% of all shown results are duplicates! - New since v1.1.2 is, that "Byte-by-Byte" search now can also be combined with other search features of the main window! - So SoftChronizer then finds (with "byte-for-byte" activated) and the "Fuzzy Logic - By Filename" search-option, binary identical files with different file names - or with the "Fuzzy Logic - By FileSize" search-option activated, files which may be different in their size (as large the difference may be, you can specify within the options-dialog), but the larger one contains the smaller file completely and additionally include other data as well!
For a future version of SoftChronizer the logical extension of this binary comparison mode is planned. - So then also shall be made adjustable, via the options, to what percentage two files may differ in content! - This could then, for example, find even the smallest traces of attached data in files (such as watermarks, viruses, etc.), if one compares the certified original file with a copy. We would say, that SoftChronizer currently is the most advanced and most configurable duplicate file search tool, regarding string-comparison of filenames. - Last but not least it additionally contains the "Levenshtein Distance" algorithm. - So if you ever want to search for files which have not the same size, but nearly the same content and nearly the same filenames, then you should take SoftChronizer! SoftChronizer supports actually 330 file-types (and: *.*), which can be combined with each other into quick-selection buttons on its main window. - For now especially supported file-types are: GIF, BMP, JPG, JPEG, ICO and MP3, which will be displayed with additional information in the result-table. - Planed is also special support for PDF files and other file-types in future. SoftChronizer does the following, when you press the [Search] button: 1.) it initializes, that means it calculates the file-size of all file-types that you search for, for this it needs to search throught the file-tree once, but this will enhance the harddisk cache-speed also for the following steps: 2.) it reads all filenames, matching the file-types you have selected, into memory, 3.) it compares each file with each other in memory, 4.) it reads special information of only those files, which are specially supported, and at last: 5.) it displays found duplicate files (probably with special information) in the table, which also may take some seconds, if more than about 5,000 - 10,000 (or even more, possibly-) duplicate files are found. SoftChronizer is not such a small application it might look like. - You, as the user, see only the interface. But inside SoftChronizer is a six-month day-by-day work, which will continuesly be updated in future (your support and suggestions provided). - Tell us, what you need or think about it, fill out the survey, register this software. ... SoftChronizer is a very special, constantly growing project, for which also we have running expenses (programming-language, hardware, 3rd party software, our homepage, advertisement, and so on, for to name only a few), and which you do not currently find any comparable one in the Internet. |
